Who is the Virtual Math Academy for?

The Virtual Math Academy is designed for students in grades 3–5 who want to strengthen their mathematical understanding, build confidence, and develop a stronger foundation for future math success.

What will my child learn?

Students focus on number sense, place value, fractions, and mathematical reasoning — the foundational concepts that support success in more advanced mathematics. Rather than simply memorizing procedures, students explore why math works and learn to explain and defend their thinking.

How is Fear No Number different from traditional math tutoring?

Fear No Number goes beyond helping students get the right answer. We focus on helping students understand the mathematics behind the answer. Students use hands-on tools such as the Suan Pan abacus, visual models, discussion, and problem-solving to make abstract mathematical ideas more concrete and meaningful.

Will this replace what my child is learning in school?

No. The Virtual Math Academy is designed to supplement and enrich classroom instruction, not replace it. Students build deeper understanding of key concepts while developing skills that can support their success in school.

What if my child struggles with math?

That’s exactly who we want to reach. Fear No Number is built around the belief that every child can learn mathematics. Students are encouraged to ask questions, make mistakes, get stuck, and work through challenging problems. We want children to leave believing, “I can do math.”

Is the program only for students who are behind in math?

No. The Academy can benefit students at a variety of skill levels. Students who need additional support can strengthen foundational concepts, while students who are already confident in math can deepen their reasoning and tackle more challenging problems.

How does a virtual program keep students engaged?

Our virtual learning environment emphasizes active participation, discussion, problem-solving, and mathematical thinking rather than passive screen time. Students are expected to think, share, explain, and engage with their peers and instructor.

Who teaches the Virtual Math Academy?
Akin Alston is the architect of MAP™ and Founder of Engageable Designs. With 30 years in mathematics education, partnerships across Seattle Public Schools, Philadelphia Public Schools, Highline Public Schools, and university positions at North Seattle College and Seattle University, he has built a working system that solves a problem the education system has not solved.

What will my child walk away with?
